Consulting

Consulting is all about helping organizations solve problems, improve performance, and make strategic decisions. Consultants work with clients across industries to analyze challenges, conduct research, develop recommendations, and implement solutions.

Consulting careers exist in management consulting firms, boutique consulting companies, corporations, nonprofits, healthcare systems, government agencies, and technology companies. While some consultants specialize in strategy and operations, others focus on areas such as healthcare, sustainability, marketing, human resources, or data analytics.

Students interested in consulting often enjoy problem-solving, teamwork, research, communication, and learning about different industries. Consulting can also provide strong preparation for graduate school, entrepreneurship, and leadership roles across many sectors.

Explore Types of Consulting

Help organizations address big-picture challenges involving growth, change management, market positioning, competition, and long-term planning. Consultants often conduct research, analyze data, and develop recommendations for clients. Entry-level roles often include analyst or associate titles.

Economic consulting is the practice of applying rigorous economic theories, data science, and statistical modeling to solve real-world problems. Unlike management consulting—which focuses on business strategy and operations—economic consulting primarily serves law firms, corporations, and government agencies by providing technical foundations for litigation, regulatory compliance, and public policy.

Life science consulting advises companies that invent medical solutions (drugs, biotech, medical devices). Healthcare consulting, on the other hand, advises organizations that deliver care or pay for it (hospitals, health systems, insurance companies)

Help organizations streamline processes, improve efficiency, and manage resources. Projects may focus on supply chains, logistics, procurement, or internal operations.

Support organizations in talent management, employee engagement, leadership development, compensation, and organizational culture. These roles combine business strategy with people-focused work. You might hear the term Executive Search firm in this area.

Advise clients on technology implementation, digital transformation, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data management. Technology consultants often work closely with software, analytics, and information systems teams.

Work with organizations to strengthen branding, customer engagement, digital marketing, public relations, and communication strategies.

Support federal, state, local, and international organizations through policy analysis, program evaluation, strategic planning, and operational improvement.

Help organizations address environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, corporate responsibility initiatives, and sustainable business practices.
