Learn by Doing

One of the most exciting, and impactful, parts of your Middlebury experience can be an internship. Internships help you explore what motivates you, test career ideas, and build real-world skills that employers value.

Whether you’re following a long-held interest, connecting classroom learning to practice, or trying something completely new, internships let you move from curiosity to action. And you don’t have to do it alone. We are here to support you through the process.

Why Internships Matter

Internships give you the chance to:

  • Explore career paths and industries that spark your interest
  • Build skills like problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and leadership
  • Gain hands-on experience you can talk about in interviews
  • Clarify what you enjoy (and what you don’t), before graduation

A 2024 national employer survey shows that employers consistently seek candidates with strong transferable skills and internship experience. Completing one or two internships during your time at Middlebury can give you a powerful edge, no matter what path you pursue.

At Middlebury, an internship is an experiential learning opportunity that:

  • Provides meaningful, real-world experience beyond the classroom
  • Includes training, supervision, and mentorship
  • Helps you build career-ready skills in a professional setting
  • Typically takes place during Winter Term and/or the summer
  • May be paid or unpaid (summer)
  • May earn academic credit during Winter Term (unpaid only)
  • Can be local, domestic, or international

Middlebury College Campus Housing

Only interns working with MiddWorks for Vermont or CCI Select organizations may request Middlebury campus housing once they have accepted their internship offer.

More information on summer housing fees and dining plans can be found here. Please note that CCI provides Residential Life with a list of confirmed funded students approved for summer housing, but students must still complete a Residential Life housing application by April 28.

Also please note that if your campus move-in and departure dates do not align with your internship start and end date, it is your responsibility to work with your supervisor to amend those dates, find alternative housing for the period(s) not covered by campus housing, or start/end the internship remotely.  Students may not remain on campus between the end of finals and the June 6 move-in weekend unless they are working Reunion and Commencement or have extenuating circumstances and have received approval from their Dean and Residential Life.

Champlain College Campus Housing

Middlebury has partnered with Champlain College to provide access to affordable, fee-based dormitory housing in Burlington. Champlain College dorms are within walking distance to downtown Burlington’s many shops and restaurants.  MiddWorks for Vermont interns working in-person with Burlington- and Montpelier-based organizations are eligible for Champlain housing.

Champlain Housing Interest Form

Housing at Champlain College in the heart of Burlington is available to eligible students from June 6 through August 1.   The total cost for this housing is $1480, which will be automatically deducted from a $5000 internship funding award. This price does not include food, but does include access to a shared full kitchen in the building.

You will  receive a confirmation email in mid-April once your housing request has been approved.  Submitting this form alone does not secure your housing for the summer.

The dormitory housing at Champlain College will be located within Bankus House. The residential space consists of single, double, and triple occupancy rooms and semi-private bathrooms on each floor and a brand new shared kitchen.

MiddWorks interns may request Champlain College campus housing once they have accepted their internship offer.  Eligible students must complete the Champlain College housing interest form.

Please email Jill MacArthur with questions. Housing is limited on the Champlain College campus and may be limited on the Middlebury campus so please confirm your plans as soon as possible.
