First Years

Your first year is a great time to get involved on campus, and begin building connections. Small experiences now can help you discover new opportunities later. Focus on learning about yourself, trying new things, and building a foundation for future internships, research, and career exploration.

Recommended for First Years

• Explore Your Interests – Reflect on your strengths, values, and interests (check out our Self-Reflection and Career Exploration Guides, Explore majors and career pathways, attend a panel/workshop/career event.
• Build Your Community – Join a student org, meet with faculty and mentors, connect with classmates and alumni.
• Create a Résumé – Build your first résumé, highlight classes, activities, volunteer work, and leadership experiences, meet with a Peer Career Advisor for feedback.
• Gain Experience – Consider campus jobs, volunteer in the community, explore research opportunities, self-directed projects, and winter-term experiences.
• Start Career Conversations – Schedule an appointment with an advisor, attend alumni programs and networking events, ask questions.

You don’t need to know your major or career path yet. Curiosity and exploration are a great first step.
