How did you get to Middlebury? I started as a MiddCore mentor!

Who do you work with? What is your favorite part of the job?I primarily work with students (and I love it), but I also work with faculty in arts, media, and communications, as well as computer science.

What is the best career advice anyone has given you? Don’t let anyone define what success looks like for you.

Interests/Hobbies: Too many to list here! I look forward to new experiences.

How did you get to Middlebury? My wife and I moved to Vermont during the pandemic. For her it was moving back. For me it was a welcome transition. I now have the great fortune to translate the skills I acquired over my last 10 years in nonprofit operations to Middlebury College.

Who do you work with? What is your favorite part of the job? I work with the wonderful team at CCI. My favorite part of the job is making their jobs easier, allowing them to expand their services and get even more creative in the services to students that CCI provides.

What is the best career advice anyone has given you? To spend less time trying to detail all of my goals. An outline works well and expression of an idea or goal to someone is a good way to get a better understanding of paths to achieve the goal.

What is your favorite campus resource? Peer Career Advisors The Peer Career Advisors are amazing students that can help you with your first college resume, tips for interview prep, or just talk with you about your career goals and services CCI offers.

Interests/Hobbies: I enjoy reading. A back and forth between sci-fi, autobiographies, and horror has become the routine. Outdoor fun for me includes going for hikes with my sons and dog on various wonderful community trails throughout Vermont. Additionally I enjoy video games, specifically those with a heavy focus on interesting narratives and quality voice acting.

How did you get to Middlebury? I began my life at Middlebury in the human resources office. After many years of assisting Middlebury managers to recruit staff, faculty, and student employees, I joined the efforts of CCI in 2017 to build relationships with employers and alumni to hire Middlebury students.

Who do you work with? What is your favorite part of the job? I work with employers and the advisors to get great opportunities in front of Middlebury students.

What is the best career advice anyone has given you? Find effective mentors, dedicate yourself to lifelong learning, and be authentic.

What is your favorite campus resource? The Experiential Learning Centers Website, of course!

Interests/Hobbies: I enjoy spending time on Lake Champlain in the summer and hiking various Vermont trails and mountains in the fall. In the winter, I prefer to travel to warm tropical climates. I love reading suspense novels that usually involve a murder (no judging!).

What brought you to Middlebury? After 12 years of living in the Northeast Kingdom, I moved to Addison County 15 years ago for the community and cultural opportunities of a college town. I’m thrilled to be working at CCI with a stellar staff of students and colleagues, focused on engaging students as they prepare for their futures.

What is the best career advice anyone has given you? Do what you love and find meaningful, and success will follow.

Interests/Hobbies: I’m a summer person and spend a lot of time outside gardening, road biking, and boating on Lake Champlain and Lake Dunmore. In the winter I still get outside for a walk and fresh air, even as I dream about warmer weather. I’m an avid reader, and enjoy cooking & baking, jigsaw puzzles, and live music, especially the Blues.

Fun Fact: I raise chickens for eggs and meat, although I didn’t grow up farming.

What brought you to Middlebury? I first came to Middlebury by way of the Institute in Monterey, CA where I earned my masters in international education. My degree culminated with a practicum at the University for Peace in Costa Rica (through a Midd alum connection!), and I returned to the Bay Area just before Covid lockdown. With the boom in online education post-pandemic, I joined a company that provided remote, career-focused learning. After several years in ed-tech, I was ready to return to my experiential learning and higher education roots and jumped at the opportunity to return to the Middlebury community in a new capacity.

What is the best career advice you have received? Be curious! Taking the time to ask clarifying questions can jumpstart critical thinking and deepen understanding. Whether it’s tackling a complex project at work, exploring potential careers, or meeting new people, being open to learning has helped me be a more effective team member, advisor, and networker.

Interests/Hobbies? I like to ski in the winter and hike and camp in the summer. I’m also an avid reader and will always welcome a bookish conversation. I grew up playing hockey and soccer and remain a big sports fan. I am excited to cheer on the Middlebury Panthers alongside my beloved Boston Bruins. At home, my husband and I love to cook, listen to music, and play cribbage and other board games.

Fun Fact about you. Growing up, I attended summer camp in New Hampshire for 10 years as a camper and counselor, and I even got married at a summer camp!

How did you get to Middlebury? I began my career in higher education in 1986 after graduating from Champlain College.  I landed my first job at the Dean of Students Office at Middlebury working for Erica Wonnaccott who was the first “Dean of Students” at Middlebury and was one of the first women in the country to hold such a position.  I have had many roles since leaving the Dean of Students Office at Middlebury.  I worked in the Residential Life Office, The Commons Office, Student Activities Office and now the Center for Careers and Internships where I enjoy supporting our Middlebury students in my role as Senior Internship Coordinator.

Who do you work with? What is your favorite part of the job? I work with our team of CCI staff, employers, alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, and College Advancement.    The best part of my job is interacting with students, administering funding for their unpaid internship and hearing their stories after their internship experience.

What is the best career advice anyone has given you? Find something you enjoy doing.

What is your favorite campus resource? Middpoints.

Interests/Hobbies: Walking with my dog, Louie (Make sure to follow #DogsOfCCI on social media), boating on Lake Dunmore, skiing and spending time with my family.

How did you get to Middlebury? I was drawn to the small but lively culture at Middlebury, and feel passionately about helping students in this transformative time of their lives, and being a friendly face on campus.

What is the best career advice anyone has given you? The best career advice I have ever been given is to be open to career paths and opportunities that may not have aligned with my initial projected career path, and not keep myself in a box.

Interests/Hobbies: Video games, getting outside, watching movies (especially scary movies!)

Fun Fact: I have a black cat named Dipper!

How did you get to Middlebury? After a decade of executive coaching, I missed the liberal arts. Middlebury is a place where I can apply my background in mentoring and business while staying true to my small college roots. In the last four years Middlebury has become an extended family: my wife, Molly Baker, works in Language Schools, and our dog, Ronco, considers himself an official CCI ambassador.

Who do you work with? What is your favorite part of the job? I run Midd2Midd, including MiddMentors, so I get to work with the 8,500 alumni volunteers, Midd Parents, and Middlebury students who are involved. More than anything else, I love hearing about the conversations and connections that happen on Midd2Midd. This is a community where people really care about one another.

What is the best career advice anyone has given you? Figure out the biggest problems your client or your employer is facing. Then help them solve it.

What is your favorite campus resource? Of course I’m biased: Midd2Midd makes it easier than ever for students to connect with alumni who have already launched from Middlebury and want to share their advice and perspective. But better than any resource are the people that Middlebury attracts. All of the innovative and impactful things this campus does, including here at CCI, happen because Middlebury has a team of fantastic staff, students, faculty, and alumni.

Interests/Hobbies: Wilderness travel, especially by canoe. Reading in front of the wood stove. Exploring little corners of the world with my family, including our son, Eli.

How did you get to Middlebury? I started my career in higher ed back in 2002 when I worked in Admissions at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA. Before that, I spent four years at The Putney School. From there, I worked at UNC Asheville in the Dean of Students Office, then at Warren Wilson College managing the Swannanoa Gathering. I joined the Center for Careers and Internships here at Middlebury after moving back home to Vermont in 2013. I’ve been happy to be closer to family and to support Midd’s phenomenal students.

Who do you work with? What is the best part of your job?Given my role in communications and outreach, I share stories from across the center and help develop systems that make our resources easier to find and use. I also have the pleasure of working closely with our student staff and collaborating with colleagues in Advancement. My favorite part of the job is interacting with students on CCI’s social media accounts and sharing their job and internship stories.

What is the best career advice anyone has given you? One of the best pieces of advice I’ve received is to prioritize growth over perfection. Early in your career, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to do everything flawlessly. But I’ve learned that real progress comes from being willing to take risks, make mistakes, and learn along the way. Each experience, whether a success or failure, adds to your toolkit and shapes who you become. I’ll sneak in a second tip: Follow what energizes you. If you can find a career that aligns with what lights you up, work becomes less about the paycheck (though that paycheck IS important) and more about fulfillment.

Interests/Hobbies:Outside of work, I can be found hiking local trails, teaching myself to crochet, or exploring creative projects like photography and pottery. I’m also learning to play hockey and love the energy and challenge it brings.

How did you get to Middlebury? I grew up in Virginia, and after college moved to Boston. After living for many years there and going on several international adventures, I met my wife, and we decided to move to her home state of Vermont. We were both fortunate to land perfect fit jobs that we still remain in, while also being able to start a family with 3 kids and making the most of this beautiful place.

Who do you work with? What is your favorite part of the job? I work with all students as an advisor. Especially those interested in the industry areas where I specialize. But also exploring students. I enjoy the most having conversations with students who are undecided about how to make the best decisions, how to take action, and how to meet people. One of my favorite aspects of the job is connecting students to alumni and helping them build relationships. Since I’ve been in the position so long, it’s especially gratifying to stay connected to alums I knew as students and introduce them to the next generation.

What is the best career advice anyone has given you? “Lure chance out of hiding.” I heard this expression once and instantly liked it. It reminds me that you can have the best intentions and plan, but you still need to be open to randomness and luck. I’m a big fan of planned happenstance, which is similar, and subscribe to lots of tenets of positive psychology. The job search and career exploration can be challenging, we often get a lot more ‘no’ than ‘yes’, so I think it’s best to try and have as positive a mindset as possible.

What is your favorite campus resource? I’m happy to be able to take advantage of the amazing athletic facilities. Whether that be the Natatorium, pick up soccer in the Virtue Field House, or the TAM trail, I enjoy being active. Even a nice walk out to The Knoll is a treat!

Interests/Hobbies: In addition to spending time with my family of my wife and 3 kids (and also close family with 2 kids right next door on our little ‘compound’), I try to get outside as much as possible. I enjoy both road biking and mountain biking, exploring trails in the woods, and recently tried out my first triathlon and century ride.

How did you get to Middlebury? After living in the Washington, DC area for eleven years after college and vowing that I would never live in a cold climate like New England, we packed our life up (site unseen for me!), our 11 month old daughter, and my spouse, Jon Isham began his teaching career in Middlebury’s Economics Department and Environmental Studies Program.

Who do you work with? What is your favorite part of the job? I work with all students and especially students and alumni who have a focus on education/teaching and those who want to use the social impact lens. I really enjoy helping students envision what a career with purpose could look like and how to strategically find the opportunities that align with their vision.

What is the best career advice anyone has given you? In the world of work and teams and collaboration, a piece of advice I was given early on, as I took on more management positions, was to “focus on the issue and not the person.” This has helped me in all aspects of communications, both professional and personal.

What is your favorite campus resource? There are so many: I love the Gear Room and having access to outdoor equipment that I might not own, and I’m happiest on campus on the Red Kelly Trail around the golf course and the Class of ‘97 Trail that wanders thru The Knoll. Speaking of The Knoll, what a gem of a place to star-gaze, meet friends for a picnic or just contemplate the great questions of the universe!

Interests/Hobbies: Being outdoors in nature and cooking meals for my family and friends are probably two of my favorite things to be doing.

How did you get to Middlebury? I was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana with my two sisters by my single mom. As a first-generation student, I loved my college experience and wanted to find a way to be a part of a college community as a professional. Incredible mentors along the way helped me navigate many personal and professional decisions.

Prior to joining Middlebury in 2016, I was privileged to serve students as director of the the career centers at Amherst College (2011-2015) and Colgate University (2007-2011). I served as chief health professions advisor and associate director at Dartmouth College (1998-2007) and began my career as a career advisor and residence hall director at Champlain College (1994-1998). After more than 20 years of work in liberal arts college career centers, I was drawn to Middlebury primarily to elevate the work of CCI with former executive director Peggy Burns and return to my favorite place in the world, Vermont.

Who do you work with? What is your favorite part of the job?I most enjoy working with colleagues to design opportunities that help students explore and pursue experiences that have the potential to be personally meaningful with regards to their learning and professional development. I get really excited when I hear how students are making connections with others in our community through mentoring and networking. My work engages a variety of collaborators across the Middlebury community, including alumni, employers, faculty, and staff and I learn something new every day.

What is the best career advice anyone has given you? Personal and professional networks will take care of you. Work to keep in touch and show gratitude.

What is your favorite campus resource?Midd2Midd and Handshake.

Interests/Hobbies: My husband, Jon, says that I think most about animals, particularly our Tela (English setter dog), Elsa (English springer spaniel dog), or Waylon (orange tabby cat). I volunteer for Girls Scouts as a troop leader. In my spare time I do painstaking-genealogy research. When it warms up in Vermont, I enjoy hiking and canoeing.
