Faculty & Staff

The CCE provides faculty members at Middlebury with support and funding to incorporate community-connected learning projects and pedagogy into their classrooms. We apply and support best practices in community-connected teaching, learning, and research. 

Our work with faculty helps to create spaces within the classroom and beyond for students to deepen their civic knowledge and practice civic skills, while engaging with big questions about who they are and how they show up with others. 

We create and sustain meaningful, ongoing, and reciprocal community partnerships that provide critical context for student learning. CCE staff build connections among community organizations, students, faculty, and staff that promote Middlebury’s educational mission while furthering the development of positive and sustainable communities.

• Gain experience by placing their learning in context, seeing first-hand how their academic inquiry connects to real-world problems and opportunities.
• Build skills and the understanding of how those skills translate from the classroom, to the community, and ultimately to their work in the world.
• Generate new knowledge and questions that inform and sharpen their academic pursuits here at Middlebury, and as lifelong learners and citizens.

• Work with experienced staff educators who can help you develop and design community-based learning opportunities that align with course learning outcomes.
• Access pedagogical resources for building course components that optimize community-connected teaching, learning, and research, and reflect best and current practices in experiential learning.
• Learn from broad networks and connections in local, national, and global contexts. Our staff draws on extensive existing and emerging relationships with and among a range of sectors that connect across academic disciplines.

CCI encourages collaboration and invites you to explore resources and services to enhance your student advising. The Faculty Guide contains up-to-date, practical information.

Together, we can help students discover experiences and opportunities that align with their academic, personal, and professional goals, preparing them for life after Middlebury.

Students at any stage of career exploration benefit from meeting with a career advisor. Advisors help clarify professional interests and develop actionable plans.

Students can book appointments via Handshake, our online platform, by selecting the advisor aligned with their interests using our online scheduling tool.

Quick Questions are drop-in sessions for help with:

• Résumés and cover letters
• Career exploration
• Resource navigation
• Interview preparation
• Other career-related inquiries

We support students at all stages—from first-years exploring courses and majors to seniors preparing for job searches.

Internships provide real-world experience tied to students’ interests, academics, or career goals. We support students in finding, funding, and preparing for these opportunities.

• Funding for Unpaid Summer Internships: Middlebury typically awards over $900,000 per summer to students for internships. Competitive grants up to $3,000 are available. Applications are due in early April. go/funding
   
• Winter Term Internships: Many internships are eligible for credit. Applications are due in late November/early December. go/wtinternships

Using the Career Center’s resources, students can access tips on networking, career exploration, and more via Handshake and the website.

• Handshake: Students use Handshake for job opportunities, internships, event calendars, and advisor appointments. go/handshake

• Midd2Midd: A platform for students and alumni to connect, mentor, and share career advice. go/midd2midd
   
• International Student Resources: International students should contact the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office for guidance on U.S. job searches and career transitions. go/isss

Faculty play a vital role in helping students connect academic interests with career goals. Here’s how we can support you:

• Connect your classes with alumni guest speakers.
• Assist in finding internships related to your courses.
• Provide funding for unpaid internships.
• Collaborate on your ideas to support students.

Between 2019 and 2025, the career center created virtual career programs featuring Middlebury alumni and guests, ensuring students gain exposure to industries despite limited in-person opportunities.
