New England Review is a quarterly literary journal published by Middlebury College. Our mission is to publish the most provoking and rewarding writing of our time from established and emerging writers across the globe. We are dedicated to inclusive excellence and believe writing that embraces “difficulty”—be it formal, conceptual, or linguistic—nurtures our democracy. We publish poetry and fiction in a variety of shapes and styles, alongside a range of nonfiction, including personal and lyric essays, cultural revaluations, travelogues, and more. Translations are also an important feature of our publication, and once a year we highlight writing from another part of the world in a portfolio of international writing. In addition to the journal, which is available in print and ebook, NER hosts literary events and maintains an active presence online. Our website features news and notes, audio, and original writing for the web, including our Literature and Democracy series, Staging Style craft essays, the Writer’s and Translator’s Notebook series, and Behind the Byline interviews.
Winter Term 2027 Editorial Intern
Interns for Winter Term 2027 will focus on various editorial aspects of New England Review. Interns will read and evaluate manuscripts submitted to the magazine and will write up readers’ reports for their assigned submissions. They’ll have a chance to discuss these submissions with various members of the NER staff and with other student interns. They’ll also learn the basics of copyediting and the Chicago Manual of Style by working with texts for the magazine.
In addition to editorial tasks, Winter Term Interns will write and format content for the New England Review website, contributing to the “news and notes” sections and to one or more of our interview series. Other possible tasks include audio editing, author Q&As, proofreading, creating social media content, and other promotional tasks. These aspects of the internship will vary according to the individual student’s interest and ability.
The bulk of the time will be dedicated to independent reading and evaluation of creative work by writers both new and established. Editorial Interns will gain insight into the submissions and publication process, broaden their view of the literary landscape, and contribute to a professional journal. This position is well suited to students with a strong interest in creative writing, contemporary literature, and/or publishing.
This internship will be hybrid, with meetings and work hours both in person and on Zoom.
